M3D The Micro Update
A software update for the M3D The Micro appeared while I wasn't paying attention. The Mac version seems to have launched at the same time.
After updating, the firmware on the printer becomes incompatible and the filament stops being recognised. Alarming for a moment, but: unplug the power, restart, then go to Settings → Advanced → Firmware Update and it sorts itself out.
After the fix, run auto-calibration before printing. I tried printing without calibration and it was a mess.
The print head moves noticeably faster now — a job that previously took 10 hours is now estimated at just over 8.
There's also a new print option called "Wave Bonding." No idea what that means.
3M 243J Masking Tape
While downloading the software update I peeked at the user portal forum, and 3M 243J masking tape was getting some attention.

Apparently applying it to the print bed almost eliminates PLA warping, even without a raft.
I ordered it immediately — I'll report back once it arrives.
Given the price, it seems far better than wasting material on failed prints and unnecessary rafts.
Yakult Man
A small bonus. My 6-year-old son requested a Yakult Man figure.
This was before the firmware update, and no masking tape either.
The 3D model was also a bit unfinished — the area around the eyes is rough.
Lesson learned: merge all objects before exporting to STL. If multiple objects overlap without being merged, the printer can take a bizarre path through them.
He was happy with it though, so I'll call it a win.
Although — apparently he wants three Yakult Men with arms and legs so they can fight each other. Just use actual Yakult bottles.
